Anne Fadiman writes reported nonfiction and essays about books, language and family. She worked in magazine editing and taught writing at Yale. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down followed the medical treatment of a Hmong child in the United States, investigating conflicts between her family's understanding of illness and that of her doctors. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Ex Libris drew on a childhood among books and the habits of readers, connecting personal memory with literary curiosity. Frog (2026) turned to subjects including a family frog, an old printer and a small Arctic magazine. Through reporting and association, its essays traced the histories and relationships attached to apparently ordinary things.
