Anne Carson (born 1950) is a Canadian poet, translator, and classics scholar. Born in Toronto, she earned a doctorate in classics at the University of Toronto and taught at institutions including McGill University and the University of Michigan. Her writing brings classical scholarship into poetry, prose, criticism, and dialogue, often combining these forms within a single work. Alongside her original writing, she has translated Sappho and Greek tragedy, connecting ancient texts with contemporary experiences of love, desire, and loss. “Autobiography of Red,” published in Japanese as 『赤の自伝』, reworks the myth of Geryon and Herakles preserved in the poetry of Stesichorus into a novel in verse set in the modern world. Its protagonist is a boy who is also a red, winged monster. Escaping an abusive brother, falling in love with Herakles, and confronting abandonment, Geryon finds in photography a means of expressing himself. The book was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Carson received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2026. By giving the myth’s defeated monster his own perspective, she turns a story of heroic conquest into an account of bodily difference, loneliness, desire, and artistic discovery.
