Anne Applebaum (born 1964) is an American journalist, historian, and author. After graduating from Yale University, she studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science and St Antony's College, University of Oxford. Specializing in Eastern Europe, Russia, totalitarianism, and democracy, she is a staff writer for The Atlantic and one of the world's leading commentators on authoritarianism and democratic decline. Her landmark book "Gulag: A History" received the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for its comprehensive account of the Soviet forced labor camp system. Her later works, including "Iron Curtain," "Red Famine," "Twilight of Democracy," and "Autocracy, Inc.," have further established her as a leading interpreter of modern authoritarian regimes, historical memory, and the challenges facing liberal democracy.
