Anne Applebaum (1964–) is an American historian and journalist whose work examines Soviet and Eastern European totalitarianism, democratic decline, and contemporary authoritarianism. After working for publications including The Economist and The Washington Post, she became a staff writer at The Atlantic. She received the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for “Gulag: A History,” an examination of the Soviet forced-labor camp system. In “Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism,” she draws on examples from Poland, Hungary, Britain, and the United States to explain why some intellectuals and political figures who once supported democracy came to embrace authoritarian politics, conspiracy theories, and exclusionary nationalism.
