Ann Hagedorn is an American journalist and narrative nonfiction writer investigating history, crime and national security through the lives of individuals. Born in Dayton, Ohio, she graduated from Denison University and earned master's degrees at the University of Michigan and Columbia University. She worked for The Wall Street Journal and the New York Daily News before turning to book-length investigative writing. Her reporting has examined subjects ranging from the collapse of a prominent thoroughbred farm and international kidnapping to private military and security companies. She has also taught writing at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and Northwestern University's Medill School. Published under the name Ann Hagedorn Auerbach, Ransom: The Untold Story of International Kidnapping followed hostages and their families alongside the diplomats and investigators involved in negotiations, examining the international business of ransom. Sleeper Agent: The Atomic Spy in America Who Got Away (2021) reconstructed the life of George Koval, an American-born Soviet intelligence officer. Hagedorn investigated how his scientific training and service in the US Army gave him access to highly classified Manhattan Project facilities, how he passed information to Moscow and how he returned to the Soviet Union after the war. The book was a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime and appeared in Yukiko Fuse's Japanese translation in 2024.
