Ann Cleeves (1954–) is a British crime novelist known for two detective series: the Shetland novels featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez and the Vera Stanhope novels set in northeast England. In “Raven Black” (『大鴉の啼く冬』), the death of a teenage girl exposes suspicions and strained relationships within a small island community. The novel won the Crime Writers’ Association’s award for best crime novel in 2006. “Hidden Depths” (『水面の弔花』), a Vera Stanhope novel, likewise brings local lives and secrets into focus through a murder investigation. Both series have been adapted for television. In 2017, Cleeves received the Crime Writers’ Association’s Diamond Dagger for her sustained contribution to crime fiction.
