Angela Pelster is an essayist and educator based in the United States. She studied nonfiction writing at the University of Iowa and now directs the creative writing programs at Hamline University. Her work brings observations of the natural world into conversation with personal memory, exploring family, loss, ecological crisis, and adaptation. In “The Evolution of Fire: Essays on Crisis and Becoming,” Pelster connects experiences including her father’s rage, the collapse of her marriage, and the destruction of her home by fire with climate change, political instability, and mass extinction, asking how crises transform individuals and societies. The book was longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
