Andy Greenberg is an American journalist and senior writer at WIRED, where he covers cybersecurity, privacy, information freedom, and hacker culture. He joined WIRED in 2014 after working as a senior reporter at Forbes. His reporting follows both the people who deploy digital technologies for attacks and illicit activity and the researchers and investigators working to understand and stop them. His investigation into Russian hackers, attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, and the globally destructive NotPetya malware became Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin’s Most Dangerous Hackers. Published in Japanese as 『サンドワーム ロシア最恐のハッカー部隊』, the book examines how cyberwarfare can disrupt essential infrastructure and spread across international business networks. His account of researchers and law enforcement officials using cryptocurrency transaction records to identify criminals, Tracers in the Dark: The Global Hunt for the Crime Lords of Cryptocurrency, explores how blockchain analysis challenged assumptions about Bitcoin’s anonymity. Greenberg received the 2019 Gerald Loeb Award for International Reporting for his WIRED investigation into NotPetya and the 2023 Gerald Loeb Award in the Feature category for his reporting on a major cryptocurrency tracing investigation. Through detailed accounts of cyberattacks and criminal investigations, his work examines the consequences of digital technology for national security, business operations, and personal privacy.
