Andrew Solomon is a writer and psychology scholar working across mental health, family life, politics and culture. He undertook international reporting, taught subjects related to clinical medical psychology and psychiatry at institutions including Columbia, and served as president of PEN American Center. The Noonday Demon combined his experience of depression with medical research, history and interviews around the world, examining illness and treatment within their social settings. It won the National Book Award. Far from the Tree grew from extensive reporting with families whose children lived with identities or conditions unfamiliar to their parents. It explored acceptance and the formation of identity through disability, illness, sexuality and other experiences, winning the National Book Critics Circle Award. Far and Away collected international reporting from 1991 onward, following people living through political and cultural transformation.
