Andrew Pettegree is a British historian and professor at the University of St Andrews. Beginning his career as a historian of the European Reformation, he has expanded his research into the history of books and communication, examining printing, publishing, news, and the circulation of books in early modern Europe. He has also led the Universal Short Title Catalogue (USTC), a major bibliographical project documenting early printed works across Europe. His representative work, "The Book in the Renaissance," traces the first 150 years of European print culture, examining how printers and booksellers sought new readers and built a market for books while confronting religious and political restrictions, piracy, unsold stock, and the financial risks of the emerging print trade.
