Andrea Wulf is a historian based in Britain. Born in India and raised in Germany, she studied design history at the Royal College of Art in London. Her work explores the history of science, nature, and ideas, connecting journeys of discovery with the worldviews they helped create. “The Invention of Nature” traces Alexander von Humboldt’s travels and his understanding of nature as an interconnected web of life. It won the 2015 Costa Biography Award and the 2016 Royal Society Science Book Prize. Published in 2026, “The Traveller: The Revolutionary Life of George Forster and his Search for Humanity” was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. The biography follows Forster from his participation in Captain Cook’s second voyage at seventeen to his involvement in the revolutionary Republic of Mainz and subsequent exile in Paris. Drawing on correspondence and research along his routes, Wulf examines how encounters with different environments and cultures shaped his advocacy of racial equality, freedom, and human rights.
