Anand Gopal is an American journalist and sociologist who reports on war, democracy, and inequality, with a particular focus on Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq. He served as an Afghanistan correspondent for The Wall Street Journal and The Christian Science Monitor and is a contributing writer at The New Yorker. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University and teaches and conducts research at Arizona State University, combining fieldwork with data journalism and social analysis. His account of three Afghans caught in the war on terror—a Taliban commander, a U.S.-backed warlord, and a village housewife trapped between opposing forces—appeared in “No Good Men Among the Living: America, the Taliban, and the War Through Afghan Eyes” in 2014. The book examines how American intervention and local struggles for power transformed civilian lives. It won the 2015 Ridenhour Book Prize and was a finalist for the 2014 National Book Award for Nonfiction and the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. His account of six ordinary Syrians resisting dictatorship and attempting to establish democratic self-government in the northern city of Manbij, “Days of Love and Rage: A Story of Ordinary People Forging a Revolution,” was published in 2026 and shortlisted for that year’s Baillie Gifford Prize. Through friends divided by political polarization, a mother resisting male dominance, and a worker pursuing equality, Gopal traces the solidarity, betrayal, and inequalities that shape revolutionary movements.
