Alice McDermott (1953–) is an American novelist. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she earned a master’s degree from the University of New Hampshire. Her fiction often portrays Irish American Catholic families in and around New York, tracing how faith, marriage, loss, and memory pass from one generation to another. “That Night,” “At Weddings and Wakes,” and “After This” were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize, while “Charming Billy,” centered on an alcoholic man and the community surrounding him, won the 1998 National Book Award for Fiction. In “Absolution,” McDermott examines good intentions, privilege, and complicity in war through the charitable activities of American women living in 1960s Saigon. She taught creative writing at Johns Hopkins University for many years.
