Alice Evelyn Yang is a Chinese American novelist whose work explores immigration, intergenerational trauma and the relationship between family memory and history. Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, she is based in New York. She graduated from Northwestern University in 2020 with a BA in Creative Writing and a minor in Environmental Policy and Culture. She completed her MFA in Fiction at Columbia University in 2022, receiving the Felipe De Alba Fellowship during her studies. Her short fiction appeared in Michigan Quarterly Review, Apogee and The Rumpus, and a story published in MQR’s Summer 2023 issue won its Jesmyn Ward Prize in Fiction. Her debut novel, A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing (2026), begins with a daughter’s reunion with the father who disappeared eleven years earlier. It traces three generations through Japanese-occupied Manchuria, the Cultural Revolution and contemporary America. The father’s memories and prophecy intersect with the daughter’s uncanny visions, using folklore and magical realism to examine the effects of colonialism and political violence within a family. Yang has described curiosity about the past her immigrant parents rarely discussed as a starting point for the novel. She combined conversations with her father with historical research to explore experiences she had not learned about while growing up in the United States. She wrote the first draft over approximately two years, alongside her MFA coursework and her first full-time job as a designer at Tin House Books. The novel was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2026.
