Aleksandar Hemon (1964–) is a Bosnian American novelist, essayist, and screenwriter. Born in Sarajevo, he was visiting Chicago through a cultural exchange program in 1992 when the Bosnian War began, preventing him from returning home and leading him to settle in the United States. He began writing fiction in English, a language he had learned as an adult, and published books including “The Question of Bruno,” “Nowhere Man,” and “Love and Obstacles.” “The Lazarus Project” was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Hemon received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2004. He also co-wrote the film “The Matrix Resurrections,” while his fiction examines exile, migration, memories of war, and identities reshaped through language.
