Alba Donati is an Italian poet and bookseller from Lucca in Tuscany. She worked in publishing publicity, author promotion and literary events in Florence, bringing writers and readers together alongside her own writing. Her poems appeared in the magazine Poesia in 1993, and she subsequently wrote about poetry for newspapers and helped organize literary festivals involving international authors. In 2019 she opened Libreria Sopra la Penna in her home village of Lucignana. Diary of a Tuscan Bookshop, originally published in Italian as La libreria sulla collina and translated into Japanese as 丘の上の小さな本屋さん, recounts the experience of running a bookstore in a village of 180 residents. Across 151 days of diary entries, she records crowdfunding, a fire, pandemic restrictions and encounters with local residents and visiting readers. Lists of books ordered each day accompany family memories and reflections on reading, showing the practical and personal work of finding a particular book for a particular person. The diary gives a concrete setting to her move from promoting literature within publishing to welcoming readers into a small village shop. In Ragazze che scrivono poesie (2025), she approaches the lives and work of women poets including Emily Dickinson, Anna Akhmatova and Antonia Pozzi through their homes, habits, relationships and social circumstances. These portraits connect the language of poetry to the everyday lives from which it emerged. Her work as a writer and bookseller shares this attention to literature as part of lived experience and human relationships. In 2025 she received the Premio Montale Fuori di Casa in its Il genio delle donne category, recognizing her poetry and the cultural life created around her bookshop.
