Alan Palmer (1926–2022) was a historian and biographer whose work explored modern European politics, warfare, monarchy, and diplomacy. Born in Ilford, he attended Bancroft’s School and Oriel College, Oxford. He taught history at Highgate School, becoming head of the subject in 1951; the future historian Martin Gilbert was among his pupils. After leaving teaching, he devoted himself to research and writing. Alongside biographies that situated individual lives within international affairs, he wrote regional histories and historical reference works. His collaborations with his wife, Veronica, included biographical dictionaries and a chronology of British history. The Decline and Fall of the Ottoman Empire (1992), translated into Japanese in 1998, followed the decline and eventual dissolution of an empire that had extended across three continents, examining its relations with European powers and changes within its territories. Napoleon & Marie Louise: The Second Empress (2001), published in Japanese in 2003, approached dynastic politics through the marriage and subsequent life of the Austrian archduchess Marie Louise. It placed her experience within the relationship between Napoleon and the Habsburgs and the diplomacy of figures such as Metternich. In Northern Shores (2005), published in the United States as The Baltic, Palmer adopted a regional perspective on the peoples surrounding the Baltic Sea. He traced Viking activity, medieval trade, Swedish and Russian expansion, and national movements, following the historical connections between countries sharing its shores.
