Alan Lomax was a folklorist who documented songs and life stories through field recording, film and writing. Born in Texas in 1915, he collected music with his father, John, and worked at the Library of Congress folk-song archive. His recordings included Lead Belly and Jelly Roll Morton, and he produced radio programmes introducing vernacular music. The Land Where the Blues Began recalled fieldwork in the Mississippi Delta, connecting blues with work, racial oppression and local culture; it won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Lomax also recorded in Europe and the Caribbean and pursued comparative research on music and dance. His recordings, films, photographs and manuscripts preserved decades of expressive life. He died in 2002.
