Alan Lightman (1948–) is an American physicist and writer. After studying at Princeton and Caltech, he taught at Harvard and became a professor at MIT, where he helped connect the sciences and the humanities in both teaching and research. His internationally known novel “Einstein’s Dreams” transforms ideas about time into a series of imagined dreams experienced by Albert Einstein in 1905. “The Diagnosis,” which was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction, follows people whose lives and sense of self are unsettled by the possibility of serious illness. In science essays such as “Dance for Two,” Lightman links cosmology and physics with human perception, art, religion, and ethics. He also founded the Harpswell Foundation, which supports the education and leadership of women in Southeast Asia.
