Agatha Christie (1890–1976) was a British mystery novelist and playwright. The creator of the detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, she became one of the defining figures of modern crime fiction through intricately planted clues and unexpected solutions. Under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, she also published six novels exploring relationships and psychological conflict. In “Absent in the Spring,” a woman stranded alone at a desert railway rest house is forced to reconsider her seemingly happy family life and confront the distance between her self-image and the reality experienced by those closest to her.
