Afshon Ostovar is a historian of Iranian politics, war, and conflict in the Middle East, and a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School. His history of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, “Vanguard of the Imam: Religion, Politics, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards,” traces the organization’s growth from the 1979 revolution through the Iran–Iraq War and examines how it gained influence in domestic politics and later interventions in Syria and Iraq. His account of U.S. and Iranian ambitions in the region, “Wars of Ambition: The United States, Iran, and the Struggle for the Middle East,” shows how the U.S. invasion of Iraq opened opportunities for Iran and how the two countries’ competing plans shaped the Iraq War and subsequent regional conflicts.
