ニューオーリンズを拠点に執筆し、『The New Yorker』『The Paris Review』『Oxford American』などに作品を発表。
Addie E. Citchens is an American novelist whose fiction examines Black women’s lives and the relationships between religion, family, and community in the South. Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, she graduated from Jackson State University and studied in Florida State University’s creative writing program and at the Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop. Based in New Orleans, she published fiction in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Oxford American. She also served as music editor of Mississippi Folklife and wrote about blues history. As the inaugural FSG Writer’s Fellow, she developed her novel through conversations with her editor. Her short story “That Girl” won a 2025 O. Henry Prize, and her first novel, Dominion, appeared that August. Drawing on her upbringing in the church, it follows a powerful preacher’s family in a fictional Mississippi town. The perspectives of his wife, Priscilla, and his youngest son Wonderboy’s girlfriend, Diamond, alternate with material including sermon notes. The story examines how love, loyalty, and silence can sustain violence and protect powerful men. During revision, Citchens substantially rewrote the second half, moving men away from the center of the narrative to examine patriarchy through the women’s experiences. Dominion was shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction and was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
