アダム・スミス（Adam Smyth、1972年 - ） イギリスの文学研究者、書物史研究者。オックスフォード大学ベリオール・カレッジ教授。初期近代イギリス文学と書物史を専門とし、印刷・製本・出版文化や読書の歴史を研究している。また、自ら小規模な印刷工房「39 Steps Press」を運営し、活版印刷や製本の実践にも取り組むなど、研究と制作の両面から「本」というメディアを探究している。代表作『本作り500年の歴史――本の印刷からZINEカルチャーまで』（原題："The Book-Makers: A History of the Book in Eighteen Lives"）は、印刷工、製本職人、出版人、紙職人など18人の人生を通して、グーテンベルク以降約500年にわたる本作りの歴史を描いた作品である。書物を単なる情報媒体ではなく、人々の技術や創意工夫によって形づくられてきた文化的な存在として捉え直し、2024年には『The Economist』の年間ベストブックにも選ばれた。
Adam Smyth (born 1972) is a British literary scholar and Professor of English Literature and the History of the Book at Balliol College, University of Oxford. Specializing in early modern English literature and book history, he studies the material culture of books, printing, publishing, and reading. He also runs 39 Steps Press, a small private press where he practices traditional printing, reflecting his belief that the making of books is as important as their texts. His best-known book, "The Book-Makers: A History of the Book in Eighteen Lives," tells the five-hundred-year history of the printed book through the lives of eighteen printers, binders, publishers, paper-makers, and other craftsmen. Widely praised for bringing the human story of bookmaking to life, it was selected as one of *The Economist*'s Books of the Year for 2024.
