Adam Smith (1723–1790) was a Scottish moral philosopher and political economist and a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. He served as Professor of Logic and later Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. In “The Theory of Moral Sentiments,” he examined how morality and social order arise through sympathy and the standpoint of the impartial spectator. His representative work, “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations,” analyzed the productivity gains created by the division of labor and the operation of exchange and competition, while criticizing mercantilism, monopoly, and collusion among merchants, thereby laying important foundations for modern economics and political economy.
