アダム・ヒギンボタムは、科学技術と重大事故の歴史を取材するジャーナリスト、ノンフィクション作家。1968年、英国サマセット生まれ。雑誌The Faceの編集長、Sunday Telegraph Magazineの米国特派員を務め、The New Yorker、Wired、Smithsonianなどに寄稿した。2019年刊の『チェルノブイリ――「平和の原子力」の闇』（原題 “Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster”）では、1986年の原発事故を、関係者への取材と資料調査から再構成した。原子炉の設計と現場の判断を、ソ連の秘密主義や国家的な事業のあり方と結びつけて描き、2020年のアンドリュー・カーネギー賞ノンフィクション部門を受賞した。続く『Challenger』（未邦訳）では、1986年のスペースシャトル事故を取り上げ、宇宙飛行士たちの歩み、開発競争、技術者からの警告が打ち上げ決定に至る組織の中でどう扱われたかを検証した。同書は2024年のカーカス賞と全米批評家協会賞のノンフィクション部門を受賞した。
Adam Higginbotham is a journalist and nonfiction writer born in Somerset, England, in 1968. He edited The Face, served as US correspondent for The Sunday Telegraph Magazine, and contributed to The New Yorker, Wired and Smithsonian. His first book, Midnight in Chernobyl (2019), reconstructed the 1986 nuclear disaster through archival research and interviews. It connected reactor design and decisions at the plant with Soviet secrecy and the pressures surrounding a national technological project. The book won the 2020 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. Challenger (2024) turned to the 1986 space-shuttle disaster, following the astronauts, the development of the shuttle programme and the treatment of engineers' warnings within NASA and its contractors. It examined how technical risks became embedded in institutional decisions before the launch. Challenger won the 2024 Kirkus Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction.
