アビール・ムカジーは、英領インドを舞台とする歴史ミステリーと現代のスリラーを手がける、インド系イギリス人の小説家。スコットランドで育ち、会計士として働きながら小説を書き始めた。40歳を前に創作に本格的に取り組み、2014年にテレグラフ紙とハーヴィル・セッカー社の犯罪小説コンテストで受賞した原稿を、2016年に『カルカッタの殺人』（原題 “A Rising Man”）として刊行した。第一次世界大戦の記憶に苦しむ英国人警部サム・ウィンダムと、インド人部長刑事バネルジーが、1919年のカルカッタで英国人高級官僚の殺害事件を追う作品で、2017年に英国推理作家協会ヒストリカル・ダガー賞を受賞した。英国で教わった帝国史と両親から聞いたインドの歴史の隔たりが執筆の動機となり、植民地の秩序を守る警察官が、自由や正義と支配の矛盾にどう向き合うかをシリーズで描いた。現代に舞台を移した『Hunted』（未邦訳）は2024年に刊行され、米国大統領選の直前に起きた爆破事件を背景に、テロへの関与を疑われる子供たちを捜す二人の親と、事件を追うFBI捜査官を描いた。人種や信仰による分断と過激化を追う独立作で、2025年に英国ブック・アワードの犯罪・スリラー部門とシークストン・オールド・ペキュリア犯罪小説賞を受賞した。『The Pinnacle』（未邦訳）は2026年に刊行され、ムンバイの高級高層住宅で起きたボリウッド女優の殺人事件を描き、容疑をかけられた米国人俳優の夫、助手、使用人たちの秘密が交差する物語へと展開した。

Abir Mukherjee is a British novelist of Indian heritage who writes historical crime fiction set in British-ruled India and contemporary thrillers. Raised in Scotland, he began writing fiction while working as an accountant. Approaching forty, he committed himself to a novel and won the Telegraph/Harvill Secker crime-writing competition in 2014. The manuscript became “A Rising Man” (2016), published in Japanese as “Calcutta no Satsujin.” Set in Calcutta in 1919, it pairs Sam Wyndham, a British police officer haunted by the First World War, with Indian Sergeant Banerjee in an investigation into the murder of a senior British official. It won the Crime Writers’ Association’s Historical Dagger in 2017. The contrast between the history of empire taught in Britain and the accounts he heard from his parents helped motivate his fiction. His series examines the contradictions faced by officers charged with maintaining a colonial order at odds with ideals of liberty and justice. His contemporary standalone “Hunted” (2024) follows two parents searching for children suspected of involvement in terrorism and an FBI agent investigating a bombing shortly before a US presidential election. It connects a pursuit across America with racial and religious divisions and political radicalization. In 2025 it won the British Book Awards’ Crime and Thriller category and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award. “The Pinnacle” (2026) moves to a luxury residential skyscraper in Mumbai, where a Bollywood actress is murdered. Her American actor husband becomes the prime suspect as the secrets of assistants and servants intersect with his attempt to establish what happened.
