Abdelrahman ElGendy is an Egyptian writer and translator from Cairo. Arrested alongside his father at a protest when he was seventeen, he spent six years as a political prisoner. After his release, his work appeared in The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, The Nation, and other publications, and he received the Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press. In “Huna: A Memoir of Revolution, Prison and Becoming,” ElGendy recounts his imprisonment in post-revolution Egypt and the refuge he found in reading and writing, examining state repression, the erasure of memory, and the meaning of resistance. The book was longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
