Abbas Amanat is a historian of modern Iran and a professor emeritus at Yale University. His research examines dynastic rule, Shia religious movements, and revolution. “Iran: A Modern History” traces the country from the rise of the Safavid dynasty in the sixteenth century to 2009. Alongside constitutional and Islamic revolutions, it examines changes in society, the economy, literature, and the arts. The biography “Pivot of the Universe: Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar and the Iranian Monarchy, 1831–1896” follows a nineteenth-century shah as the monarchy faced demands for reform at home and pressure from foreign powers. “Resurrection and Renewal: The Making of the Babi Movement in Iran, 1844–1850” uses historical records to investigate the religious expectations and political and social changes surrounding the emergence of the Babi movement.
