Aaron Benanav is an American historian and sociologist whose research spans automation and the future of work, unemployment and underemployment, global economic development, and alternative economic systems. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Development at Cornell University. He studied history at the University of Chicago and earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In "Automation and the Future of Work," Benanav challenges the widely held argument that rapid advances in artificial intelligence and robotics are the primary cause of declining demand for labor. Instead, he traces employment insecurity and economic stagnation to deeper problems of overcapacity and slowing global growth, and explores how shorter working hours and more democratic forms of economic organization could reduce society's dependence on paid employment.
