Tsunaki Asano (born 1971) is a Japanese insect scientist from Hokkaido and an assistant professor in the Faculty and Graduate School of Science at Tokyo Metropolitan University. He earned a doctorate in environmental earth science from Hokkaido University and specializes in insect biochemistry, genetics, and evolutionary biology. His research focuses on the chemical reactions that harden insect exoskeletons and on the physiological and evolutionary mechanisms that enabled insects to flourish on land. His representative book, "Konchū wa Naze Umi ni Inai no ka," investigates why insects—despite comprising more than a million identified species—are almost absent from the oceans. Drawing on molecular biology, genomics, and taxonomy, it examines the evolutionary relationship between insects and crustaceans, exoskeleton formation, oxygen use, and aquatic insects to explain the bodily systems that supported the insects’ adaptation to terrestrial life.
