Masako Arai (born 1960) is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on politics, economics, and environmental issues. She graduated from the Department of French Studies in Sophia University’s Faculty of Foreign Studies and is a member of TUP, a translators’ group working for peace. Her translations include, with Sachiko Ikushima, Naomi Klein’s examination of economic growth, fossil-fuel dependence, and the climate crisis, “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate.” She also co-translated Klein’s analysis of Trump’s branding strategies and the use of crises to advance political agendas, “No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need,” again with Ikushima. Her translation work brings Japanese readers accounts of how corporate influence, political power, and environmental crises affect everyday life.
