Kaoru Aoki (born 1956) is a Japanese translator and science writer specializing in mathematics and physics. Born in Yamagata Prefecture, she studied physics at Kyoto University and completed its doctoral program, earning a doctorate in science. Her translations introduce general readers to scientific ideas and the processes behind discoveries. She received the Mathematical Society of Japan’s Publication Prize in 2007 for her contribution to public understanding of mathematics. Following more than three centuries of attempts to solve a celebrated mathematical problem, Simon Singh’s “Fermat’s Last Theorem” appeared in her Japanese translation as “Feruma no Saishu Teiri.” It places Andrew Wiles’s research, setbacks, and eventual proof within the broader history of mathematics. Exploring why the universe has the properties we observe, Aoki’s own Japanese-language book “Uchu wa Naze Kono Yona Uchu nano ka: Ningen Genri to Uchuron” introduces the anthropic principle, which connects observations of the universe with the conditions necessary for observers to exist. It examines changing cosmological models, multiverse proposals, and string theory, asking how science approaches questions that are difficult to test. Investigating changes in the frameworks through which scientists understand evidence and formulate problems, Thomas S. Kuhn’s “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” appeared in Aoki’s new Japanese translation based on the fiftieth-anniversary edition. Its account of normal science, crisis, and paradigm change earned her the Japan Society of Translators’ Special Translation Award for 2023.
