Masaru Akiyama (1957–2026) was a Japanese translator of nonfiction on history, biography, science, and international affairs. A graduate of Rikkyo University, he worked as an editor before entering translation. He translated David McCullough’s “The Wright Brothers,” following the brothers’ experiments and technical improvements alongside the family members and collaborators involved in their pursuit of powered flight. In Andrew Doig’s “This Mortal Coil,” he translated an investigation of changing causes of death, including infection, famine, and warfare, in relation to medical and social developments. His translation of Oliver Darkshire’s “Once Upon a Tome” presented a memoir of a historic London antiquarian bookshop through encounters with books, colleagues, and customers. He died on 7 July 2026.
